What is Physiatry ?  What is Physical Rehabilitation Medicine?

The Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine (PARM) held its First National Physiatry last October 13, 2018 in Silay, Negros Island, Visayas, Philippines. This activity aims to increase awareness about Physiatry as a medical specialty and what it can do to help improve the lives of their patients.

What is a Physiatrist?
Physical Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) or Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians, also known as physiatrists, treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.

Physiatrists are medical doctors who have completed training in the specialty of Physical Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) and may subspecialize in Stroke, Brain Injury, Spinal Cord, Neuromuscular Medicine, Pain Medicine, Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine, Sports Medicine and hospice and palliative care.

Specifically, Physiatrist, Physical Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM), Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians:

Treat patients from childhood to adulthood.
Help the patient achieve their full functional potential.
Have a broad medical expertise to treat disabilities, impairment, and handicap throughout a person’s lifetime
Diagnose and treat weakness and pain as a result of an injury, illness, or disabling condition
Determine and lead a physical rehabilitation treatment/prevention plan
Lead the physical rehabilitation team of medical professionals – physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, orthotists, prosthetists, psychologists, and other physicians to optimize patient care
Work with primary care physicians, family physicians, geriatricians, pediatricians, occupational medicine physicians, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, rheumatologist, and sports medicine physicians.
Treat the whole person, body, soul, and spirit.

Depending on the injury, illness, or disabling condition, physiatrists may treat their patients using the following procedures/services:
