Dr. Phil uses the power of television to tell compelling stories about real people.
The Dr. Phil show provides the most comprehensive forum on mental health issues in the history of television. For over a decade, Dr. McGraw has used the show’s platform to make psychology accessible and understandable to the general public by addressing important personal and social issues. Using his top-rated show as a teaching tool, he takes aim at the critical issues of our time, including the “silent epidemics” of bullying, drug abuse, domestic violence, depression, child abuse, suicide and various forms of severe mental illness.
In 2010 a new 4-H program in Southeastern Kentucky got started by taking injured raptor birds and rehabilitating them. Unfortunately not all of the birds can be nursed back to health and returned to nature. Those birds must live in captivity and be cared for by humans for the rest of their lives. That’s how the 4-H Raptor Rehabilitation Program began in Letcher County and they now have a facility to take care of the birds and conduct educational programs with what they call their “forever friends”. Recovery Ways offers many different types of therapies for our patients to help them understand their addiction and any co-occurring disorders, learn coping skills for sober living, and to help build support groups. This therapy is sometimes considered as experiential; meaning it is engaging in hands-on help that provides recovering addicts with the ability to process and deal with past trauma, offer a stronger sense of self, and exposure to new sober hobbies. Recreation therapy allows people to build more trust in themselves as well as others. Some of the more demanding activities can simulate real world stress. People in early recovery learn how to overcome obstacles without using drugs or alcohol. Recreation therapy can also help with some co-occurring disorders such as PTSD, OCD, eating disorders, anxiety, and depression. Treating these disorders and the addiction together make relapse less likely. These activities also help recovering addicts become more personally responsible, develop their communication skills, learn problem-solving skills, and teamwork and support. These are all skills they can use in their new sober lifestyles as well as the activities they participate in.
