In today’s news, studies show that chiropractic care is effective in enhancing athletic performance.
Sports chiropractors are able to identify an athlete’s deficit and work to correct it before an injury occurs. This is what separates a chiropractor from a physical therapist; the approach is much more proactive, essentially treating the conditions that might cause an injury. These conditions are also what might impede an athlete’s performance, therefore making the case that chiropractic care not only treats an athlete’s injuries, but also enhances their performance.
By restoring normal neurology and biomechanics a sports chiropractor will reduce pain, decrease the severity of injury, and possibly enhance athletic performance. Through spinal manipulative therapy, performance is improved since it is through the full use of the nervous system that peak performance can be achieved. Aquatic therapy / Hydrotherapy for Athletic Rehab

Here is a short video that Paulina & myself produced which addresses the ultisation hydrotherapy for athletic rehab. We have provided some exercise examples that we use, a rationale for implementing this type of rehab and some research which underpins this modality. Why use hydrotherapy:
Well according to a systematic review by Kim & Choi in 2014, hydrotherapy for athletic rehabilitation: They found that the effects of water buoyancy allowed athletes to return early to dynamic exercise for a number of reasons, some of those being:
-a decrease in the perception of pain due to sensory input from water
-a reduction of gravity acting on the body,
-and reduced weight-bearing and shearing forces through the affected joint or muscle.

This SR examined 11 articles of high to moderate quality; based on PEDro scale; with the average score of 7. The articles included subjects with various injuries: such as knee ligament injuries, ankle instability, lower back pain as well as healthy individuals.
The articles reviewed; examined the effects of underwater plyometric training, balance training, and functional rehabilitation and several studies compared land based and aquatic therapy with the following results:
-For plyometric training in water or on land; there were significant increases in vertical jump after 4 weeks and 6 weeks in both groups
-Significant improvements in concentric peak torque were observed in the dominant leg of both groups after 6 weeks
-For balance training in water or on land; In both groups, balance ability of the injured leg was significantly improved after the training period.
-For functional rehab in water or on land; No significant differences were detected between groups in the ankle joint position sense.
Some of the limitations highlighted by this systematic review are:
-Only two articles included were randomized controlled trails
-Some of the articles included in the review did not provide detailed information on data analysis.
-Due to differences within the subjects included in the studies, various outcome measures and differences between aquatic therapy programs used, it is impossible to present a validated injury specific hydrotherapy program for athletic population.
-Further research is required to provide better insight into of the benefits of aquatic physical therapy in rehabilitation of sports injuries.

So how does weight-bearing in water compare to weight-bearing on land?
Studies such as Skelton & Dinan in 1999 have suggested that standing in chest-deep water, is comparable to approximately 40% of the total body weight when standing on dry land, while stepping in waist-deep water increases this weight-bearing value to approximately 60%.

Dynamic Hydro Balance
Other advantages of Hydrotherapy according to Nualon et al in 2013 are that it help increase rom due to a reduction of the weight of limb when submerged in water and can also help improve static and dynamic balance as the body adjusts to the turbulence of the water.

Hydro-Plyo training:
Hydrotherapy allows the early introduction of plyometric training which can help improve muscle strength and power output with reduced impact and shearing forces and reduced muscle soreness. Studies, such as Martel et al in 2005 have shown a significant increase in vertical jump height and concentric peak torque after 6 weeks of plyometric training in water and concluded that plyometric training in water was as effective as plyometric training on land.

Hydro- Running
Studies by Bushman and Wilber et al have both proposed that running in water is comparable to running on land and therefore Cardiovascular fitness levels and VO2 max capacities can be maintained when running in a hydro environment.
