Richard Fessler, MD, PhD, a renowned spinal surgeon at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital, will demonstrate the use of minimally invasive surgery to treat scoliosis during a live interactive webcast.
“With minimally invasive scoliosis surgery, we don’t have to dissect the muscle which has tremendous benefit to the patient and allows them to return to everyday life within weeks,” commented Dr. Fessler. “There is also less blood loss and a lower risk of infection.”
Fessler has been on the cutting edge of minimally invasive spinal surgery since the early 1990s and has developed many of the now widely-used techniques and surgical tools. He has also played a significant role in converting nearly two dozen operations into minimally invasive surgeries. Minimally invasive scoliosis surgery is available to patients between the ages of 25 to 75, with the older percentile growing at the fastest rate.
“The baby boomers are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population and they’re a group that wants to stay active. These conditions are extremely disabling, so there’s an increased need for treatment options that allow patients to maintain a good quality of life,” says Fessler.
Scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine, affects about 6 million people in the United States and can limit activity, cause debilitating pain, reduce respiratory function and diminish self-esteem. In addition to scoliosis, Fessler treats lumbar stenosis, lumbar fusion, vertibrectomy and spinal cord tumors, and similar problems in the cervical and thoracic spine. Video Rating: / 5

The main drug rehabilitation programs used to treat addictions includes in-patient rehabilitation where addicts live within a residential setting. Around-the-clock supervision and treatment is given to ensure success. Outpatient care is given to individuals who live on their own, but must receive treatment or counseling through visiting a clinic or drug rehab center. Those with an alcohol addiction may need time to clear their head and rid their body of toxins, which may occur in a sober house. There are also local support groups that help continue drug rehabilitation following stronger sessions of therapy and treatment.
There are two main reasons why drug rehab is more effective than short term rehabilitation programs. it’s more effective is that drug treatment cannot truly begin until the reason for a person’s addiction is established. The reasons are as varied as the people seeking treatment but several themes typically appear. Some people turn to drugs to avoid dealing with a short or long term unpleasant situation. This can be anything from an abusive family relationship to the sudden death of a loved one. Other people turn to drugs as a way to ease the symptoms of a treatable mental illness. Long term drug rehab allows the therapists and counselors at treatment facilities to help a drug addict determine why they turned to drugs in the first place in order to form an effective treatment plan. This process takes time.
