The amber nectar. The sauce. Booze. Lord knows we love it and will continue to drink it until our livers are withered and grey. But why does putting it inside our bodies turn us into babbling nutters swinging from chandeliers & shouting at puddles? Time for Sam to explain…

At Turning Point Centers, we support individuals as a lifelong partner through their journey toward healing and recovery from the disease of addiction and mental health. Our compassionate team treats addiction as a chronic, progressive disease. And because our team understands that addiction is a disease that impacts individuals differently, we provide a variety of Behavioral Therapies and Medication-Assisted Treatment options when appropriate. Our Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) employs a “whole-patient” approach to substance use disorder treatment, combining counseling and behavioral therapies with FDA-approved medications.
Our program is different than a traditional 12-step treatment program. We provide an integrated system of care that utilizes best clinical and medical practices, comprehensive patient measurement and engagement tools, and systems that ensure each individual receives a complete, individualized course of treatment. Because we see addiction as a multi-faceted disease that impacts different aspects of an individual’s well-being, we provide a variety of behavioral therapies, family programming, physician-directed care, and Medication-Assisted Treatment when clinically indicated. This combination is more effective than any single approach.
We provide Physician-Directed treatment along a continuum of care including residential treatment, day treatment, intensive and general outpatient, sober living, and a lifetime of aftercare. The role of the physician is to assess for any medical needs that should be incorporated into treatment, provide medically-assisted treatment interventions, monitor the patient during the phases of treatment, monitor co-occurring conditions, and become the long-term source of assistance to maintain a patient’s recovery. This does not mean that our entirety of care is primarily provided by a physician, but that a physician assumes the responsibility for directing the patient through the entirety of the treatment process.

As we work with individuals in the process of recovery, we keep in mind the ultimate goal is not abstinence. In fact, abstinence is only the first step to stabilize the brain and start the process of healing. Once stabilized, we help the individual work toward the goal of preventing relapse. There are a lot of stereotypes and stigma surrounding alcohol that prevent both understanding and adequate care, and the spectrum of symptoms that alcohol use disorder can include is a lot more complicated than you might think.

Bin Gao, M.D., Ph.D., is a Senior Investigator and Chief of the Laboratory of Liver Diseases at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Intramural Research Program (IRP), in the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). http://irp.nih.gov/pi/bin-gao
The mission of the Laboratory of Liver Diseases, established in 2009, is to investigate the immunological aspects and molecular pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease (ALD), and to explore novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of this disorder. ALD is a major cause of chronic liver disease, leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer. The latest report from NIAAA shows that cirrhosis is the 12th leading cause of deaths in the United States with a total of 29,925 deaths in 2007, of which 48.1% were alcohol-related. The spectrum of ALD includes simple steatosis, alcoholic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. At present, there are no small animal models available for human alcoholic hepatitis (inflammation), cirrhosis, and alcoholic liver cancer. Thus, our laboratory has been actively using liver injury models induced by ethanol and other insults to investigate the immunologic mechanisms underlying alcoholic liver injury, to study the effect of inflammation on liver disease progression, and to explore novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of ALD. Currently, we are focusing on the roles of innate immune cells (eg. natural killer and natural killer T cells), cytokines (eg. interleukin-6, interleukin-22), and the Jak-STAT signaling pathways activated by these cytokines in liver injury, fibrosis, regeneration, progenitor/stem cell proliferation, and hepatocarcinogenesis.
