What is drug addiction and what are our treatment options? The DSM covers 10 classes of drugs in the section “Substance Related & Addictive Disorders.” When any of these substances are taken in excess, it directly activates our brains reward system. It’s this “reward” like feeling that we call being “high.” Because doing drugs makes us feel really good, it is incredibly hard for someone addicted to them to stop. Some even report feeling an intense depression after coming down from a high. There are many options for treatment, but I talk about 5 in this video.
1. GP or your general doctor. It’s important to get a full physical to make sure that everything is okay and that we are in good health. Especially important before detoxing.
2. Group therapy: Whether it’s NA or AA it’s great to hear other people’s stories and know that you are not alone. Also, due to their sponsorship program, it can give you some extra support when you need it most.
3. Medication. I know there’s a stigma about taking medication but medication can not only help you manage the symptoms of a possible secondary diagnosis, but also if we are detoxing, medication may be needed to help our body do it safely.
4. Therapy! It can help to talk about the reason that we actually started using, and even be given some behavioral techniques to cope with the urges to use.
5. Inpatient! If you are able to afford (or get it covered by insurance) inpatient is the best for addiction recovery. You get all of the other treatment options I mentioned earlier all in once place. You get support 24/7 as well as constant medical supervision and treatment.

Pax Prentiss, CEO and co-founder of Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura, explains the drug and alcohol treatment center’s non-12 Step holistic approach. “The Passages approach is different than all other treatment centers because we look for the underlying conditions, which are causing people to use drugs and alcohol, and once we identify those underlying conditions, we heal them,” he says.

The main drug rehabilitation programs used to treat addictions includes in-patient rehabilitation where addicts live within a residential setting. Around-the-clock supervision and treatment is given to ensure success. Outpatient care is given to individuals who live on their own, but must receive treatment or counseling through visiting a clinic or drug rehab center. Those with an alcohol addiction may need time to clear their head and rid their body of toxins, which may occur in a sober house. There are also local support groups that help continue drug rehabilitation following stronger sessions of therapy and treatment.
There are two main reasons why drug rehab is more effective than short term rehabilitation programs. it’s more effective is that drug treatment cannot truly begin until the reason for a person’s addiction is established. The reasons are as varied as the people seeking treatment but several themes typically appear. Some people turn to drugs to avoid dealing with a short or long term unpleasant situation. This can be anything from an abusive family relationship to the sudden death of a loved one. Other people turn to drugs as a way to ease the symptoms of a treatable mental illness. Long term drug rehab allows the therapists and counselors at treatment facilities to help a drug addict determine why they turned to drugs in the first place in order to form an effective treatment plan. This process takes time.
* Electrical Stimulation/Ice:
Interferential current is often used in clinics to help decrease pain and accelerate the healing process. For acute muscle injuries, cryotherapy—or cold treatment—along with electric muscle stimulation, can aid in reducing the muscle pain and tightness. The ice can also provide an analgesic effect.
Ultrasound is a modality which uses high frequency sound waves. The high frequency causes a vibration of the tissues below the skin, which creates deep local heat that reaches much further than a hot pack alone. Ultrasound improves local blood flow to reduce swelling and chronic inflammation. Little to no sensation of heat is felt by the patient.
* Adjustment and the Activator Method®:
– Manipulation is a type of manual therapy which is used by chiropractors to promote improved range of motion and decreased pain. Typically patients will come in with spinal pain, but joint manipulation or adjustment is not limited to the spinal joints. The elbow, shoulder, knee, hip, and ankle are commonly manipulated to improve mobility and joint mechanics.
– The Activator® tool can be used on patients who require a gentler adjustment.
Flexion distraction is a technique in which the doctor uses hand placement, along with a specialized table, to create traction and muscle stretching in the lower back. This helps to take pressure off of the discs and lower spinal joints in order to improve pain and any radiating symptoms that may be present.
The Active Release Technique (ART®) is a soft tissue movement technique that can treat a variety of problems in the nerves, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Overused muscles can lead to pulls, tears, and micro-trauma, causing pain and scar tissue, which prevents muscles from moving freely and traps the nerves. During an ART® session, the chiropractor feels for texture, movement, and tightness. The patient is directed to move the affected body parts in particular ways, while the ART® is performed by the chiropractor.
* Inversion Table:
Inversion tables are used as a form of traction. Our inversion table is used under the supervision of the doctor in order to help unload the discs and joints throughout the body.
* Aqua Bed:
Hydrotherapy is used for muscle relaxation and for improved patient comfort in conjunction with other therapies in our office. Warm water pressure travels up and down the back and legs, making for a soothing and comfortable experience.
RockTape is a kinesiology tape that is made for endurance athletes, as well as for people who have muscle pain from acute injuries. It applies compression for recovery or decompression for swelling and pain. RockTape is applied to a stretched muscle, lifting the skin so that more blood flow and oxygen get to the muscles. This reduces fatigue. RockTape also helps with lymph drainage and reducing toxins in the body.
